Before you buy

Five things to check before buying a plugin

Start here

Check what you need the plugin to do, whether it works with your software and computer, how to activate it, and the total cost. If there is a trial, try it in a project like your own before buying. Treat a discount as one part of the decision.

1. What do you want to use it for?

Choose one need, such as adding a piano sound or adjusting vocals. Check whether your existing tools can already do it. You may not need another plugin for this project.

2. Does your software support the format?

Check that your music app supports a format the plugin provides, such as VST3 or AU. Compare both manufacturers’ specifications. A Windows or Mac label alone does not confirm that it will work in your app.

3. Does this version support your computer?

Compare your operating system, processor, memory and free storage with the manufacturer’s requirements. Include any extra sound downloads. If there is a trial, test it in a project like your own.

4. How is the license activated?

Check how to activate the license and how many computers you can use. For iLok products, the publisher decides which activation methods are supported. Computer and Cloud activation are not available for every license. iLok Cloud needs an internet connection throughout use.

5. What is the total cost?

Check the checkout price, currency, taxes, subscriptions and any required activation device. Read upgrade and refund terms. Ask the store about unclear points before buying. ToneLumo's setup fee is separate from the product price.
